Perfect Your Podcast Pitch

How to Pitch a Podcast: Hot takes from the masterclass with Rosie Holt & Catie Dawson

Ready to unlock the secrets to becoming a sought-after podcast guest?

You listen to podcasts right? (Of course you do). When you're listening to a host and their guest chatting away, sharing funny stories, nuggets of wisdom or vulnerable moments from their journey, have you thought ‘I have something amazing to share too’, but felt unsure about how to make it happen?

You're not alone.

Many entrepreneurs and creatives hesitate when it comes to pitching themselves to podcast hosts. That's why I teamed up with Catie Dawson from the Super Creative Podcast to help you confidently pitch to a podcast.

Catie and I delved into the art of podcast pitching, uncovering what hosts look for and how to put your best foot forward in a way that feels authentic, that won't make the host toss your email into the digital bin.

Understanding the Podcast Landscape

Before crafting your pitch, it's crucial to understand the podcasting world:

  • Know Your Audience: Identify podcasts that align with your audience, their values (and the values of the host you're pitching to).

  • Research the Host: Understand their style, previous guests, the topics they cover and the style of podcast they've created. Is it a panel with a deep dive into expert topics? Is it a 2 hour conversation? Is it a short & sharp chat? Know the format first.

  • Listen Actively: Familiarise yourself with the podcast's tone and content to tailor your pitch to fit.

Crafting a Compelling Pitch

Your pitch is your first impression. You better make it count:

  • Be Concise: Keep your email brief and to the point.

  • Highlight Value: Clearly articulate what you bring to the table and how it benefits their audience.

  • Personalise: Reference specific episodes or topics to show you are genuinely interested in their podcast.

Authenticity Over Perfection

Podcast hosts appreciate genuine stories:

  • Share Your Journey: Be open about your experiences, including challenges and lessons learned. Allow yourself to be vulnerable (chances are, if you're invited onto the pod, that vulnerability will have to shine through there too.

  • Avoid Jargon: Speak in a relatable manner, steering clear of industry-specific terms and PR speak.

  • Show Personality: Let your unique voice and perspective shine through. There's only one of you, you're unique, let them see it!

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Stay clear of these common mistakes:

  • Generic Pitches: Avoid mass emails that lack personalisation (the host will smell this a mile away)

  • Overemphasis on Self-Promotion: Focus on the value you provide, not just your achievements and accolades.

  • Neglecting Follow-Up: If you don't hear back, a polite follow-up can go a long way.
