How to get more people to open your emails

Why are you still ghosting your email list?

Or only emailing your list when you’ve got something to sell? Tut tut….

By doing this, you’re not only leaving money (and connection) on the table but you risk eroding trust and skyrocketing your unsubscribe rate.

At this month’s Empower Her catch up, our guest expert Tiffany dropped some seriously valuable insight and actionable tips to help the group embrace email marketing.

Now, I'm sharing those insights with you.

Here are the 3 topics we covered, Tiffany's expert insights and the mistakes most business owners make (and how to avoid them).

1️⃣ Creative ways to grow your list

  • Freebies have to be a quick win that your audience DESIRE. If they don’y want it, they won’t download it.

  • You want to give them a quick win or a transformation, not information.

  • Any freebee you create should be with your core customer in mind. Do they consume and learn from video content? Create a video download.

2️⃣ How to create subject lines that get clicked

  • Shorter is often better - aim for under 50 characters if possible. (Feel free to throw in an emoji or two 😉).

  • Lead with curiosity, not clickbaity subjects or lead with false urgency (this will also erode trust and once you lose trust, it's hard to get back.

  • Go for simple over smart: if they don’t understand your subject, why would they open it?

  • Numbers often catch the eye (“3 ways to…”, “5 steps to…”).

3️⃣ How to write newsletters people look forward to

  • Measure against yourself, not others or industry standards (industry standard for service based industries are around 20%).

  • Use language that feels like it’s coming from a friend, not a corporation and use story telling to help your audience connect with you

  • The email that everyone wants to read is the email that helps them, entertains them or creates a connection between you and your audience.

  • Once you've convinced them your email is worth opening, your next challenge is to get them to click your CTA. The CTA average sits around 2%. Good is 4%-7%.

Final Thought: Before you hit send, ask yourself

  • What’s in it for them?

  • Why would they care?

The common mistakes I see business owners make

❌ Only emailing when you want to sell something.
❌ Ghosting leads after they sign up (consider this your sign to create a Welcome Sequence.
❌ Creating another dusty PDF freebie that nobody really wants.
❌ Writing subject lines that are too clever (and get ignored which means your emails stay unopened).

What to do instead:

✔️ Grow your list with creative strategies that feel aligned, think workshops, collaborations, VIP access, or interactive quizzes.
✔️ Keep your subject lines simple, clear and curiosity-driven. (If they don’t understand what you mean, they won’t bother opening it.)
✔️ Write emails that are helpful, entertaining, and valuable enough that people look forward to seeing your name in their inbox.
✔️ Consistency builds trust and when your audience trust you, they are more likely to buy from you.

Remember: your email list is one of the most powerful marketing tools you have.

But only if you use it.
